Spence Jr. activates rematch clause

Former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. activated his rematch clause to face Terence Crawford.

Errol Spence Jr. will have another chance against his biggest rival.

The former unified welterweight champion has activated his rematch clause to book another fight against Terence “Bud” Crawford, Spence’s trainer Derrick James has confirmed.

The rematch will likely take place at junior welterweight, marking both fighters’ debuts in the 154-pound division. The date and location, along with other details of the fight, were not immediately known.

In July, Crawford and Spence met in Las Vegas in one of the most anticipated fights in recent years. The two rivals clashed for the better part of the last four years until they finally fought for the undisputed welterweight title.

The fight, which was expected to be a 50-50 affair, resulted in a loss for Spence (28-1, 22 KOs), who was knocked down three times. Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) forced a ninth-round stoppage to win all four major division belts. With the victory, Crawford became the first male wrestler to become the undisputed champion in multiple weight classes.

The loser of the fight had 30 days later to activate a two-way clause for a rematch fight later this year. As part of the clause, the winner of the July fight would decide whether the rematch would take place at 147 pounds or Spence’s preferred 154.
