Why the Chiefs or Eagles will win the Super Bowl
Patrick Mahomes and company know better than anyone that winning the Super Bowl is a lot better than losing it.
And experience alone gives these Chiefs a big advantage as they prepare to face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Add to that the talents of two-time league MVP Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce, Chris Jones and the rest of the stars of a rebuilt defense, and it’s clear why the Chiefs will be celebrating another championship when the weekend concludes.
Another advantage lies in head coach Andy Reid’s ability to make the right decisions.
“I think we understand the whole process better,” Patrick Mahomes said. “We can kind of find those little opportunities where you have to study the videos a little bit more and get some extra rest.
“Especially in the first one, when I was in Miami, I was like, ‘You’ve got to go here or there.’ And now we’re just trying to find a way to do things. Where I am now I have a better understanding of the process.”
Patrick Mahomes actually has a great understanding of just about everything.
He set career highs in yards through the air this season with 5,250. He led the league with 41 touchdown passes and helped the Chiefs win a seventh consecutive American Conference Western Division title.
And he accomplished all that while juggling various activities in his private life, with a newborn son, investments in several Kansas City sports franchises, and multiple other business opportunities.
If it all comes down to the team with the best options through the air and on the ground, the Eagles have a clear advantage: a pair of 1,000-yard receivers and a storied ground attack.
If the key factor is a more talented perimeter, the Eagles have a clear advantage: two corners of proven ability.
Philadelphia has built a team with no glaring holes, which could open the door to a repeat of the Super Bowl five years ago, when the Eagles took advantage of a roster with more variance to overcome an MVP-winning quarterback and capture the title.
The Eagles will do to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs what they did to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots and give Philadelphia its second Lombardi.
“We’ve been overlooked all year, and I don’t know why,” defensive star Haason Reddick decried. “Because we have stars at every position, people who make plays. This team has talent from start to finish. I don’t think I’ve ever been on one this talented.”
The biggest evidence about the season Patrick Mahomes has had is that he received 48 of 50 first-place votes for the Most Valuable Player award, which was handed out Thursday night.
