What inspired Canelo to become a professional fighter?
“The other day I remembered when he was going to debut as a professional. I took him to my house, I took him on a diet. I took him to the movies to see the movie The Fighter. At the end of the movie, there’s a fight on a very cool stage, I turned around and said to Saul, ‘Can you imagine when you fight there.’ I saw it and it made his skin crawl,” shared Ricardo Alvarez, transporting himself back to that moment when he was sitting in a movie theater with his now very famous brother.
After watching that movie, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was inspired and imagined himself fighting: “Now he’s been fighting a lot. He didn’t even imagine he was going to be a star; the truth is that he was a very dedicated kid, very focused on what he wanted,” adds Ricardo Álvarez.
Those scenes that made the skin of a young Saúl Álvarez bristle will be experienced again next Saturday, when he faces British John Ryder at the Akron Stadium, home of the Chivas Rayadas del Guadalajara.
The weigh-in ceremony for the fight between Alvarez and Ryder will take place today at the Teatro Degollado in downtown Guadalajara.
