Tom Brady makes touchdown pass history

Tampa Bay Buccaneers veteran quarterback Tom Brady became the first quarterback in NFL history to reach 600 career touchdown passes Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

The record-setting play occurred with 10 seconds to play in the first quarter on a 9-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mike Evans. The Buccaneers got the ball back after outside linebacker Shaq Barrett forced a fumble by Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields that was recovered by defensive tackle Vita Vea.

Brady was congratulated with a big hug from head coach Bruce Arians after the play.

Evans gave the ball to a fan in the stands before realizing the significance of the record, however, Buccaneers personnel were able to retrieve it, presenting the fan with a different ball. Evans was also on the receiving end of Brady’s pass in Foxborough that set the record for most air yards in NFL history in the Week 4 game against the New England Patriots.

Prior to Sunday’s game, Brady needed two touchdowns to reach that figure. His first touchdown pass of the game came on a 4-yard touchdown toss to Chris Godwin. The Bucs also scored on a 2-yard touchdown carry from running back Leonard Fournette.

Brady already held the NFL record for most touchdown passes. The next closest quarterback is Drew Brees with 571.

A win today would give the Buccaneers a 6-1 record, marking the best start in franchise history.
