Saunders doesn’t rule out retirement after fall with Canelo

He considered the fight against Canelo a good stoppage, although he had the desire to move on
Former world champion Billy Joe Saunders did not rule out the idea of retiring, when he chatted with TalkSport about his recent loss to Mexican Canelo Alvarez, after undergoing successful surgery for a fractured orbital bone and cheekbone, the product of a sharp rise in the eighth round that left him, as he revealed, seeing double or triple for a few seconds.

BJ Saunders stated that, at 31, it is very possible that he will walk away from boxing and that only the right fight would make him consider a comeback. He recognized Mexican Canelo Alvarez as a fighter of the highest level and stressed that he did not give up the fight for lost, but that his corner, seeing how he had the injury, ruled out the possibility of continuing for the ninth round.

“At the end of the day, I’m 31 years old, if I didn’t want to go back to work, if I wanted to stay still, if I wanted to relax, I could do it. If I did, I’ve put a lot of time into boxing and I’ve paid my dues. The sport has been very good to me,” added the Brit. “I’m 31 years old, I haven’t been punished, I haven’t been hit hard and I’m not brain dead, I can spin sentences, so I have to assess my options (…). Everything will depend on whether there is the right fight,” he added.

BJ recalled the moment when Canelo gave him the multiple fracture. “I said, that was a good punch, tremendous punch. I started jumping and my eye fell out. I was seeing double and even triple for about 30 seconds and it wasn’t my legs, it was my eye. It was a serious injury, an injury I never thought I would have, but you never know what can happen in boxing,” he said.

Finally, he considered that the fight was well stopped, although he was eager to continue, and had no more words for his victimizer than respect: “He is a very good boxer, he is a good fighter, he uses many tricks. When I got in the ring with him I thought, this is it, but I guess everybody assumes the same thing when they start fighting.”
