Runner Frank Gore to seek boxing career

The veteran says he has turned down offers from the NFL with the intention of making a fight in the ring a reality.
Veteran running back Frank Gore could soon trade in the soccer for boxing gloves.

According to a report from NFL Media, Gore has turned down some NFL offers to focus on a possible boxing career.

“I’ve been training for both [sports], I’ve always loved boxing, so that’s what I’ve been doing,” Gore told NFL Media. “We’re going to try to make a fight happen, if we do, you’ll see me in the ring.”

Gore, drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 2005 draft, played 15 uninterrupted seasons in the NFL before being released at the end of 2020.

Gore’s first 10 years as a pro were with the Niners, then he played three seasons for the Indianapolis Colts and in the last three seasons alternated with the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and New York Jets.

In his 15 NFL seasons he accumulated 3,735 carries for 16,000 yards with 81 touchdowns, in addition to 485 receptions for 3,985 yards and 18 touchdowns, earning five Pro Bowl selections and was also named to the 2010 team of the decade.

Since brothers Jake and Logan Paul’s foray into boxing, celebrity bouts have been a constant, including former wide receiver Chad Johnson, who faced Brian Maxwell last June, a bout in which he fell to the canvas after taking a powerful right to the face.

“I fell in love with how hard [boxing] is,” the 38-year-old Gore said. “I thought, ‘I couldn’t fight.’ But I always like a challenge, so I just kept doing it and doing it and I saw myself getting better and better. You’ll see when I get in the ring.”
