Real or not: Can Emanuel Navarrete match Christopher Diaz’s experience? Will Andy Ruiz win a heavyweight title again?

World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion Emanuel ‘Vaquero’ Navarrete of Mexico will face Puerto Rican Christopher ‘Pitufo’ Diaz in another battle of Mexico vs. Puerto Rico in the ring this Saturday, April 24 on a Top Rank bill on ESPN Deportes (10 p.m. ET, also on ESPN+). Diaz has only lost two fights, to former champion Shakur Stevenson at featherweight and Masayuki Ito at junior lightweight, both by decision. Can Diaz’s experience give Navarrete trouble?

Meanwhile, Puerto Rican knockout sensation Edgar Berlanga will be looking for his 17th consecutive first round knockout win on Saturday on the same bill as Navarrete-Diaz. Will he get it against Demond Nicholson, who has only been knocked out twice in 27 fights?

Elsewhere, WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney will face Venezuelan Jorge Linares, and interim WBC titleholder Ryan Garcia will face Dominican Javier Fortuna, on separate bills. Are they on track to unify the WBC belt and give the fans the fight they really want, and if so, when?

And then there’s Mexico’s Andy Ruiz Jr. who returns to the ring for the first time in nearly a year and a half on May 1. Can he get back to winning ways and win a heavyweight title again after his disappointing loss to Anthony Joshua in their rematch?

Rothstein: It’s not real. Yes, Christopher Diaz has fought some top level fighters, especially Stevenson and Ito, but he lost to both of them in fairly convincing unanimous decisions. Navarrete has a similar number of fights, more pro rounds than Diaz, according to BoxRec, and Navarrete’s power is real. Even in his decision win over Ruben Villa in October, Navarrete knocked Villa down twice to win the WBO featherweight world title, and he has shown the ability to close out fights.

Navarrete may not have fought the same caliber of competition at featherweight as Diaz, but he has plenty of experience and is legitimate as a rising star in the sport. Navarrete hasn’t lost in nearly a decade, his only professional loss coming on July 26, 2012, when he lost to Daniel Argueta, and while Diaz will be one of his toughest opponents to date, Navarrete shouldn’t miss in this fight.
