Ortiz reveals the most difficult pitchers

David Ortiz revealed which have been some of the most complicated pitchers he faced in his Major League career.

“When I played, Pedro (Martínez)… Pedro was difficult. And you know what I mean,” Ortiz responded when questioned by Alex Rodríguez during Sunday night’s broadcast for the United States.

‘El Big Papi’ was for much of his career a teammate of the Dominican pitcher with the Boston Red Sox, and although the sample is small, Ortiz only connected him three hits in seventeen at-bats, although one of them was a home run while with the Minnesota Twins.

“The problem with Pedro was that he had four different pitches he could throw at any time. With power … in your mind as a hitter, when you have to worry about four different pitches instead of one, it makes your life a lot more complicated,” Ortiz said of his compadre and future Cooperstown Hall of Fame teammate.

“Another one is Mike Mussina, he also had great stuff. Mariano (Rivera) was tough. No matter how you felt, Mariano was tough,” commented David Ortiz despite the fact that against the Yankees’ closer, the Dominican was successful batting him 11-32 with a home run and four runs batted in.

David Ortiz also mentioned that he faced several very good left-handed pitchers, including Andy Petitte, with whom, in his opinion, he had “good battles”.
