NFL game in 2023 at the Azteca still without solution
The Counselor for Cultural Affairs for Sports Diplomacy of the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, Alejandro Barrón, commented that he still does not know what the solution will be for the game that the NFL has planned for 2023 at the Azteca Stadium, although he mentioned that “everything possible will be done so that Mexico continues to host it.”
“I do not have the information, but work continues to secure that venue, because Mexico is a very important market, it was seen this year, because nine teams have their marketing and commercialization area in Mexico, it is one of the most important markets, I think it is in their interest to keep the game in Mexico,” said the counselor for Cultural Affairs for Sports Diplomacy of the U.S. Embassy in Mexico.
The Azteca Stadium will be remodeled in the middle of next year, as it prepares to host the 2026 World Cup. That will lead to the closure of the property and complicate the organization of the 2023 NFL game.
“The NFL, we are sure, is going to do a great job for Mexico to continue hosting.”
Mexico has become one of the NFL’s main markets, due to the roots and demand for the sport in the country. In 2022, a game is scheduled between the San Francisco 49ers and the Arizona Cardinals, for which pre-sale tickets are already sold out.
There are other countries, such as Spain and Germany, that have sought to host NFL games, while Mexico has an agreement to host this year’s game and at least one more, which could be in 2023, if a solution is found for the remodeling of the Azteca Stadium.
