“I’m finally back home.”

For the first time in about a year and a half, the Dominican player Robinson Canó, stepped again at Citi Field in New York City to see action in a regular season game, and ended up connecting the first home run of the game, and the first of 2021 for his personal account.

The second baseman wanted to transfer his excitement to social media by leaving a message declaring himself “finally back home” after, according to the player, it had been a long time coming.

“Who’s ready for Opening Day at #CitiField? It’s been so long (the wait) and I’m finally BACK HOME,” Canó wrote on his official Twitter account.

Robinson Canó was suspended in November 2020 for the entire 2021 Major League Baseball season due to the use of banned performance-enhancing substances for the second time in his major league career and thus forfeited $24 million in salary for that campaign.

The San Pedro de Macorís native had been suspended in May 2018 by the Major League Baseball commissioner’s office for violating baseball’s anti-doping program (Furosemide) for 80 games while with the Seattle Mariners.

The last time Canó saw home action playing for the New York Mets was on September 23, 2020 against the Tampa Bay Rays in a game in which he missed all four at-bats he had. That season he finished with a .316 batting average.

Since then Canó has remained active playing in Dominican winter ball with the Estrellas Orientales and with the teams representing the LIDOM in the Caribbean Series.

In 2020, the Dominican middle infielder has seen action in 4 games with the Mets connecting three hits in fifteen at-bats with two runs batted in.

Opening Day for the Mets at home coincides with Jackie Robinson Day festivities and the team will also unveil a statue in honor of former player Tom Seaver prior to the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
