Evander Holyfield vs. Kevin McBride will be a six rounder in Florida.

Evander Holyfield’s comeback fight against Kevin McBride will officially go six rounds in Florida on Saturday, June 5, as part of a Triller card that will feature undisputed lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez as the headliner.

The 54-year-old former heavyweight champion and Hall of Famer Holyfield (44-10-2) last fought professionally in May 2011, when he defeated Brian Nielsen by TKO. He was recently pushing for a trilogy fight against short-term rival Mike Tyson, who returned in November 2020 to the ring in a fight against Roy Jones Jr. also under Triller’s management.

Holyfield and Tyson negotiated the possibility of a third bout, following the two they starred in the 1990s, the latter a boxing classic because of the controversial ending in which Tyson bit and ripped off part of Holyfield’s ear.

The third bout did not materialize after Tyson turned down a $25 million offer to step into the ring with Holyfield.

Holyfield thus joins several boxing legends, such as Tyson and Jones Jr. returning to the ring for exhibition bouts. Among them are Oscar De la Hoya, Miguel Cotto, Juan Manuel Marquez, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera and Julio Cesar Chavez.

For his part, McBride (35-10-1), 47, is known for sending Tyson into retirement after defeating him by knockout in 2005. He also retired from boxing in 2011.

Lopez, meanwhile, would make the first defense of his lightweight championship against Australian challenger George Kambosos Jr. (19-0, 10 KOs). Lopez (16-0, 12 KOs) became the unified lightweight champion after defeating Vasiliy Lomachenko in October 2020 to win the IBF, WBA and WBO belts in the 135-pound division.

Triller, a social media company with little experience promoting boxing events, submitted a winning bid of $6 million in February to promote the Lopez-Kambosos fight when Lopez failed to reach an agreement with his promoter Top Rank.
