Dolphins fire medical consultant who treated Tagovailoa

The neurotrauma consultant involved in the care of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa during Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills was fired after it was discovered he made “several errors” in his evaluation.

Tua Tagovailoa was evaluated for a concussion during the Bills game after he hit the back of his head on the ground. The quarterback was cleared to stay in the game and play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

He was taken to a hospital Thursday after hitting his head on the turf after being caught by Bengals tackle Josh Tupou in the second quarter. Tua Tagovailoa remained on the turf for approximately 12 minutes before he was taken off the field on a stretcher and eventually taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with a concussion and neck injury.

Tua Tagovailoa was diagnosed with a concussion and is in protocol with no return date, according to the Dolphins.

The Dolphins stressed that Tagovailoa passed multiple concussion evaluations, including one at halftime of the Bills game and each day leading up to Thursday’s game, according to NFL medical director Allen Sills.

The NFL Players Association initiated its right to request a review of the league’s concussion protocol after Sunday’s game.

The Dolphins’ next game is Oct. 9 in New York against the Jets.
