Cruz y Wood to be auctioned on August 12
The World Boxing Association informed the representatives of Leo Santa Cruz and Leigh Wood that next August 12 will be held the auction process to dispute the featherweight championship of the entity, after they have not reached an agreement as requested on July 20, hoping to leave only one champion in the division.
The WBA also informed that Spanish Sandor Martin and British Ohara Davies were called to an eliminator fight in the Super Lightweight division, category that will have as champion the winner of the fight this August 20 between Alberto Puello and Botirzhon Akhmedov, since the belt was left vacant after the resignation of Scottish Josh Taylor.
Last month, the WBA informed that it denied permission to Leo Santa Cruz to unify belts with the also Mexican Rey Vargas, because he had to expose first against Leigh Wood, and then opened a period of free negotiations for the fight, which will end, informed the boxing entity, next August 12 with the auction.
The minimum to participate in the auction is 150 thousand dollars, of which 75 percent will correspond to Santa Cruz, as super champion, and the remaining 25 percent to Wood, who arrives as regular champion; however, this figure is still far from what they will surely end up charging in case they get to fight, since possibilities are heard for both Leo and Leigh.
In the case of the eliminator fight between Ohara Davies and Sandor Martin, fourth and fifth in the current 140-pound ranking, they will have an auction of at least $110,000, which would be distributed identically, according to the letter they have sent to the representatives of both fighters.
News is also expected soon about the situation of Mexican Juan Francisco ‘Gallo’ Estrada, who would be taking another course different from that of the WBA, which asked him to face Joshua Franco in the super flyweight division. There is talk of a possible third fight between ‘Gallo’ Estrada and ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez for the end of 2022.
