Cowboys star player would look good in Beckham Jr.

If free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has interest in joining the Dallas Cowboys, the club is doing everything it can to let him know the interest is mutual.

Speaking on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday, owner and general manager Jerry Jones endorsed the current receiving corps and the shape of the Cowboys’ aerial attack, but added that Beckham “is someone we have all the appreciation in the world for who he is as a competitor and I know the Cowboys star on the helmet when he puts it on could look pretty good.”

In eight games against the Cowboys with the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns, Beckham has 40 receptions for 558 yards and seven touchdowns.

On Monday, head coach Mike McCarthy said, “I’ve always been a big fan [of Beckham],” and current and past assistants on his staff have spoken highly of him. Beckham is recovering from a torn ACL suffered during last season’s Super Bowl while playing for the Los Angeles Rams.

“From Ben McAdoo, Joe Whitt, all the guys from the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns, everybody has nothing but good things to say about him,” McCarthy noted. “I’ve always been very impressed with his ability to play soccer. I’ve heard a lot of great things about him over the years.”

No visits have been scheduled with Beckham so the team can see where he is in his recovery, but Jones typically declines to discuss any potential prospects in free agency for competitive reasons.

Beckham told Complex in a video posted to Twitter on Sunday that when he signs with his next team, he would like it to be a multi-year situation. The Cowboys were one of four teams he mentioned.

“Whether it’s Buffalo, Green Bay calling, the Cowboys, a reunion with the Giants, I want to be able to leave the last thing I have, I’m not saying I only have three or four [seasons] left…but [I want to turn] these next three or four years into something where I can buy a house, like I can call this place home, I’m tired of living out of two-week suitcases, I’ve had rock and roll life,” he sentenced.

The Cowboys were in talks with the Houston Texans until before last week’s trade deadline for wide receiver Brandin Cooks, but nothing materialized. They also had brief talks with the Denver Broncos for Jerry Jeudy, according to sources.

The Cowboys have the league’s No. 25 aerial offense and haven’t had a receiver with 100 yards in a game yet this season. Jones told The Fan that he believes the aerial attack will improve, especially as Dak Prescott gets more comfortable in his return from a broken right thumb. Jones indicated that CeeDee Lamb is giving the Cowboys everything they want as No. 1 receiver Michael Gallup, who tore his ACL last January and missed the first three games of the season, is improving every day and free agency addition James Washington is close to returning from a broken foot.

“I anticipate more effectiveness, I anticipate not only getting the ball out of there fast, but Dak being able to throw the ball on the move, but I see some downfield passes in the air attack,” Jones said. “I like what we’re doing with our intermediate game with the tight ends. We’re just getting better at the receiver position. We may or may not add something to the receiving corps, but if we don’t, I like where we are.”
