Canelo Alvarez demands Billy Joe Saunders not to start making excuses

The Mexican multi-champion assured that he is ready for the fight and that the Briton only betrays his losing mentality.

Four-time world champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez sent a solid message to Britain’s Billy Joe Saunders ahead of their May 8 fight in Texas, asking him not to start making excuses because that only shows a losing mentality.

Canelo Alvarez said that Saunders will be complicated the first rounds, but patience will be an indispensable ally, he also pointed out that Caleb Plant would be the next target, unless he asks for unattainable things, and assured that he will stay at 168 pounds, so we will no longer see him at 175 pounds.

“I’m aware that it will be a complicated fight, because of his left-handedness, because of the style he has, but it’s a matter of patience,” said Canelo, who responded to Saunders’ comments about a fair environment for the fight and that he will fight like Mayweather: “Always losers make excuses, and always ahead of time, however he fights, I’m ready for any style, if he wants to go out and move, to make a fight, if he wants to go out and do whatever he wants, I’m ready for that.

“You have to be patient, they are fighters with whom you have to be patient, at that time (against Floyd in 2013) I didn’t have the experience of today, I have the experience of being patient, of looking for the moment, of winning round by round, without the need to get desperate and want to knock out, I think it’s totally different.”

In fact, Saul stressed that the Canelo of today, could compete head to head with that Mayweather of 2013. “I think it would be a 50/50, it would be a more even fight, I wouldn’t try to try to knock him out, but to have the right patience to get my punches in and make it a very different fight, it’s hard to explain, until another fight,” he said.

About Caleb Plant, he assured that, if everything goes well with Saunders, he is the next target, unless he asks for implausible things. “I think that can make it a little difficult, he who asks, conditions, the truth that yes, if he doesn’t go crazy, the fight goes, that’s what I want, but as sometimes they know what I want, sometimes they put on bows and start talking nonsense. I hope the fight can be made without complications, that obviously he is happy and the fight is made, but if not, we’ll see,” he added.

Finally, he ruled out the possibility of returning to 175 pounds, category to which he moved up to dethrone Sergey Kovalev achieving the quadruple championship. “We took a chance to win the fourth title, but I felt a little slow, I didn’t feel at my best, but we already won the fourth title,” he concluded.
