Brito sent to Triple-A
The Dominican pitcher got the win Sunday pitching five scoreless innings but the team has no need for a fifth starter at the moment
Puerto Rican Jhony Brito had a brilliant major league debut as the New York Yankees defeated the San Francisco Giants on Sunday afternoon for the second time in three games.
Brito was impassable for five full innings allowing just two hits, with one ticket given up and six strikeouts, throwing 76 pitches and 51 of them resulting in strikeouts.
In addition to the news of his sensational debut with the ‘Bronx Bombers’ it also transpired that the Dominican was sent to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre despite his great performance on the mound.
However, according to reports, Brito’s demotion has nothing to do with his performance on Sunday or any previous action and it’s all because the Yankees have no need to carry a fifth starter on the active roster and prefer to carry an extra bullpen arm.
“Very comfortable, felt the ball and his position well. Very good performance for us out there when we need him,” manager Aaron Boone said of Brito’s performance Sunday with emphasis on the changeup as his primary pitch.
All indications are that the Yankees will work with a four-man rotation that includes Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, Clarke Schmidt and Dominican Domingo German, who will start Tuesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies after throwing a bullpen session on Sunday.
