Silva submits Holly Holm

We have a new contender at women’s bantamweight. Mayra Bueno Silva submitted Holly Holm in the second round of the women’s bantamweight main event of UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.

The standing guillotine choke finish came after Holm, 41, left her neck exposed as she tried to tackle Silva over the fence. Silva pounced on him and forced Holm to surrender without even knocking her down. The 31-year-old Brazilian called up Julianna Peña to fight for the vacant 135-pound title vacated by Amanda Nunes.

“I did what I said I was going to do,” Silva said. I want that belt. I deserve it. Nobody ends [fights] like me. for all. This is my belt. This is the belt of Brazil. I will do this for Amanda Nunes, for my country, for everyone.”

Bueno Silva (11-2-1) has now won four fights in a row, the last three by submission, including Lina Lansberg in February. She entered the fight ranked number 10 in the UFC rankings.

It was the biggest win of Silva’s UFC career, and arguably Holm’s biggest single loss.

Holm (15-7) came with three wins in her last four fights, most recently by unanimous decision over Yana Santos in March. Holm, a former UFC champion best known for destroying Ronda Rousey.

Given her high rank and her name value, a win could have catapulted her into a UFC title fight. Four of her previous six losses in the UFC have come in title fights, and with Nunes’ departure from the sport, she was ready to make a serious title run. She is now 1-2 in her last three appearances.
