Tszyu knocks out Carlos Ocampo

Australian Tim Tszyu landed another knockout of Mexican Carlos Ocampo in the same first round to retain the WBO interim super welterweight world title in front of his home crowd at the Gold Coast Convention Centre in Broadbeach, Australia.

The outcome came at 1:17 seconds of the first round after a powerful left jab knocked out the Mexican.

“I want to ask a question to everyone present: What’s my f…. name?” was the first reaction from the interim champion, son of International Boxing Hall of Famer Kostya Tszyu.

The Australian wasted no time in his first world title defense, coming out aggressive from the opening bell. Tszyu connected 10 of his 20 powerful punches, mainly to Ocampo’s head, and knocked the Mexican down twice, first with a right hook and again with a left uppercut, so referee Danrex Tapdasan had no choice but to end the bout.

Tszyu’s quickest knockout and fourth first-round knockout of his career put him at 23-0 (17 KO). He is now expected to fight Charlo in Las Vegas for the American’s quartet of belts at 154 pounds no later than September 30 this year, according to the recent WBO mandate.

When asked if he had a specific message for Charlo, Tszyu said, “I’ve done it faster than your guy [Errol Spence Jr.], man. So come on, let’s dance.”

It’s not the first time Tszyu has been put in this situation. He and Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) had agreed to fight earlier this year; however, it was postponed indefinitely after Charlo broke his left hand in training camp.

Rather than wait for Charlo to recover, Tszyu opted to stay active. He first fought and defeated Tony Harrison in March to capture the interim WBO super welterweight title, before stepping back into the ring and defending his title against Ocampo in style.

Earlier, Australian Sam Goodman won a split decision over American Ra’eese Aleem in the super bantamweight world title eliminator to improve his record to 15-0.
