Canelo landed twice as many punches as Ryder

Mexican multi-champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez overwhelmed Britain’s John Ryder in a comprehensive unanimous decision victory on Saturday night at the Akron Stadium in Zapopan, Jalisco.

According to CompuBox, Canelo Alvarez was superior in every round to Ryder in punches landed, finishing with nearly twice as many punches as his opponent.

Canelo Alvarez landed more total punches in each round and in only two episodes did he match Ryder in power punches and one in jabs.

In power punches the biggest difference was in the fourth round with a ratio of 3-1, with Canelo connecting 15 punches for 5 of the British, also the ninth episode was the one with more total punches of the Mexican with 22 for 9 of Ryder.

Canelo Alvarez landed 179 total punches out of the 459 he threw, that is, he was 39 percent effective, while Ryder only landed 80 punches despite throwing his punches 457 times, two less than Canelo.

In jabs, the first round was the only one in which they ended with the same numbers after both connected only one, from then on the dominance was of the Mexican, who in the seventh round saw a difference of 10-0, besides Ryder went four rounds (the third, sixth, seventh and ninth) without connecting a single jab despite throwing it 70 times.

In total, Canelo landed the jab 62 times out of the 206 times he threw it, that is, he had a 30.1 percent effectiveness rate, while Ryder was satisfied with 11 punches in 200 attempts.

In terms of power punches they were equal in the seventh and twelfth with 7 and 6, respectively, the remaining 10 episodes went to Canelo, achieving a difference of 17-9 in the ninth.

Canelo’s total power punches were 117 of the 253 he threw (46.2 percent) against 69 of 257 attempted by Ryder.

At the end of the fight, the judges gave scores of 120-107, 119-108 and 119-108, all in favor of Canelo Alvarez, decreeing victory by unanimous decision.

With this victory, Canelo improved his record to 59-2-2 with 39 knockouts, while Ryder stood at 32-6, 18 KOs.
