Benintendi, suffers wrist fracture and requires surgery
“It’s too premature to say right now, obviously,” Benintendi said. “We’re still trying to find out more. That’s the situation right now. Just taking it day by day at this point, I guess.”
Manager Aaron Boone revealed the diagnosis of a broken bone and the need for surgery after the American East leaders beat Tampa Bay 2-1 on Sunday. Benintendi will be re-evaluated by specialists Monday back in New York.
Benintendi said he previously had surgery when he was a freshman in college and was surprised at how the situation unfolded Sunday.
“I don’t really know about bones or things like that,” Benintendi said. “So I’m just listening to what they’re telling me. I didn’t know it could grow another bone or whatever.”
Benintendi’s injury occurred while taking a swing Friday night and he was placed on the 10-day injured list the next day.
The 28-year-old slugger was an All-Star this season with the Kansas City Royals and then was traded to the Yankees in late July. He got off to a sluggish start with New York, but had been more productive at the plate recently.
Benintendi is batting .304 overall with 51 runs produced. With the Yankees, he is batting .254 with 12 RBIs in 33 games.
