Montgomery shines, while Montás sinks

To say that things have not been going well for the New York Yankees during the second half of the Major League Baseball season would be, to a certain extent, to minimize the bad moment the New York Yankees are going through. Despite bolstering the areas where they needed help and bringing in a pitcher like Frankie Montás, who until his arrival in New York was having a great year, the Bronx Bombers’ situation has taken a major downturn.

Montás has pitched 14 innings in three starts for the Yankees since joining the team. He has allowed 14 earned runs, bringing his ERA to 9.00, has only struck out eight, while issuing six walks. His FIP is 5.55 and his WHIP is 1.714. Despite the poor numbers, the team’s offense has given him some help and he has only lost one of his three appearances.

The Yankees had to sacrifice pieces to bolster themselves heading into the final stretch of the season and to do so they traded one of their most recognizable pitchers, Jordan Montgomery.

Unlike his previous club, with whom he had respectable numbers during the season, since his arrival with the St. Louis Cardinals he looks like a completely transformed pitcher in a positive sense. Montgomery has pitched 16.2 innings in three starts, picking up three wins, limiting opponents to just one blank sheet (total) which translates to an ERA of 0.54, while his FIP is 1.80 and WHIP is 0.900.

The parallel between the two pitchers is striking, given the fact that the Yankees made the Montgomery trade counting on who they understood would be a better piece for their starting rotation. Regardless of the problems the team has faced in being able to hit, not being able to count on the backup they took for their pitchers has also hurt them considerably.

While Montgomery shines for the Cardinals, Montás is sinking in the Yankees slump.
