Pujols close to breaking Bonds record
Albert Pujols is on the verge of tying Barry Bonds’ all-time home run record. It is not the most home runs in history, which it is evident that the Dominican slugger will not be able to reach in any way, but a particular mark in Bonds’ possession that will also be equally difficult for other hitters to reach.
On Wednesday, Albert Pujols hit his eighth home run of the season and 687th overall for his career, but in doing so he made Austin Gomber of the Colorado Rockies the 488th pitcher to hit a home run. In doing so, Pujols moved to within one pitcher of the all-time mark held by Barry Bonds, who hit at least one home run against 489 different pitchers.
With 52 games left in the St. Louis Cardinals’ season, Pujols has a great chance to not only tie the mark, but to surpass it. It is important to consider that Pujols spent the last ten years (until 2021) in the American League, so there is a whole generation of pitchers against whom he has not faced and if you also take into account that the Cardinals have given a good amount of innings to “The Machine”, he will have plenty of opportunities before the end of the year to try to surpass the mark.
Unfortunately, that same amount of games remaining means that Pujols could be running out of time to reach the 700 home run mark, so he will have to close out the season strong if he hopes to have a chance to add to his already impressive resume as the fourth man to do so in MLB history.
