Canó: “I let the fans down
Devastated. That’s how Robinson Canó felt when he learned of his suspension for the use of a banned substance in 2020 that took him out of action for the entire 2021 Major League Baseball season.
The Dominican middle infielder gave an interview to the New York Post in which he revealed the feelings close to depression he went through and the apologies he had to make after going through the process of his stanozolol suspension.
“It’s a difficult time. You have to sit in front of your teammates, apologize and talk to them. It’s harder than playing baseball. It’s something you don’t prepare a statement for. You have to say it from the heart. I’m glad to be back and I want to be here to help this team,” the Petromacorisano told the New York newspaper.
Canó recounted what he experienced during the process in which he had to walk away from MLB baseball and took refuge in his native San Pedro de Macorís, being a full-time father, training and playing in Dominican winter ball.
“To be honest, it’s something for which you don’t have words that can describe how bad you feel, not only as an athlete but as a person. You want to disappear. Now I know what it feels like when someone has depression,” said the Mets player.
The 39-year-old Robinson Canó said he was devastated when he learned of the suspension and disappointed in himself, adding that he “failed” his fans, his native Dominican Republic and the young players who looked up to him.
Also in the interview with the New York Post the player, who was during his suspension with the LIDOM Eastern Stars, revealed that before arriving at training camps in Port St. Lucie he contacted several of his Mets teammates to apologize, including Pete Alonso, Jacob DeGrom, Max Scherzer and Francisco Lindor.
“I never open up to talk to people to tell them how much I love baseball. For me, the less I can talk, the better. I came here to play the game and not just go around and say what I like and don’t like,” added the Dominican who is batting for .217 with a homer and 3 RBIs in 6 games on the season.
