Abel shows GGG the way to beat Canelo

When you talk about Gennadiy Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KO’s) you inevitably think of Abel Sanchez, the man who, from his corner, set him on the road to becoming the best and most fearsome middleweight (160 pounds) in the world.

Although the working relationship was broken in April 2019, with the announcement of the Kazakh fighter, still the Mexican trainer closely follows the performance of his former pupil and revealed in an interview what are the keys for him to beat Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (57-1-2, 39 KO’s) in their possible third fight, agreed for September this year.

Sanchez suggested that Golovkin should go back to his roots to have any chance against his compatriot, who has become the face of the sport and for some time now has been the undisputed number one in the pound-for-pound rankings.

“[GGG] should not try to be a boxer. Strength is his strength,” assured the Tijuana, Mexico native trainer in an interview granted to Fighthype.com, “Gennady pushes you and then he beats you up and you succumb to Gennady.”

“When he’s trying to box like he is now and he’s absorbing punches, that’s not good for him,” he continued. “In my opinion, when you’re trying to be something you’re not…. Gennady is not a boxer… maybe he was a boxer when he was an amateur, and at the beginning of his career, but Gennady developed a style, a way of fighting that made his opponents, not only fear him in the ring, but fear him outside the ring.”

The Kazakh fighter, since losing his undefeated in the second fight against Canelo, on September 15, 2018, has made only three fights, -contrasting with Canelo’s seven-, resolving two by knockout (Steve Rolls and Kamil Szeremeta) and the other by unanimous decision (Sergiy Derevyanchenko), which at the same time brought him the conquest of the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) world belt.

He now heads into a dangerous unification fight against Japan’s Ryoto Murata (16-2-0, 13 KO’s), the World Boxing Association (WBA) middleweight champion, in Japan on April 9. Only by coming out victorious will he have a chance to settle the score with the Mexican gladiator.

“Canelo got to the point now where, in my opinion, the only ones who can beat him are [Artur] Beterbiev, [David] Benavidez and a well-trained Golovkin; he’s not ill-trained in terms of who he’s working with now, because he has a great trainer (Johnathon Banks) right now. What I’m talking about is getting back to what brought him to stardom, not to be the fighter but to take Canelo down. Those are the only people that can beat Canelo, the ones that take him down,” he concluded.
