Chocolatito’ Gonzalez defeated ‘Rey’ Martinez

Nicaraguan Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez won Saturday by unanimous decision over Mexican Julio Cesar “Rey” Martinez at super flyweight and won the World Boxing Council Diamond commemorative belt.

Gonzalez, now with a record of 51 wins, 41 by knockout, and three losses, won 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112 over Martinez, 18 wins, 14 by knockout, 2 losses, in a fight held in San Diego, California.

Román González, 34, imposed conditions with his strength and mobility during the first third of the fight. The Nicaraguan connected with more power to the Mexican.

Rey’s best moment was in the third round; he threw combinations that put the 34-year-old veteran in trouble.

Towards the sixth round, Gonzalez punished Julio Cesar with his right hand and made him stagger, but the bell saved his rival.

In the seventh round, the Nicaraguan kept punishing the Mexican-born, right jabs, hooks and combinations hurt Julio Cesar, who kept throwing punches to avoid stopping the fight.

In the eighth and ninth rounds, Rey Martinez contained the attacks of “Chocolatito”, managed to keep the distance and encouraged the exchange in the center of the ring, despite the obvious superiority in the power of his opponent’s punches.

In the penultimate round, the Mexican boxer again withstood the punishment and threw a couple of uppers against Gonzalez that made him tremble, but Roman was not intimidated, he responded with strong lefts that “Rey” absorbed.

In the eleventh round, Martinez, knowing he was down on the scorecards, came out with more aggressiveness, threw right flies, “Chocolatito” landed a couple of right hands and inflamed the face of his opponent, who did not stop responding, despite the punishment.

Brave the Mexican returned to accept the exchange of blows; the Nicaraguan came in with combinations, connected to the face, punished the body, but could not knock down the injured 27-year-old opponent.

In the break before the twelfth and final round, Roman Gonzalez did not even sit down, he was noticed whole, but “Rey” Martinez did not surrender, practically without legs to move he endured the exchange.

The Mexican threw volleys with the intention of winning the fight by the fast track. Roman took advantage of the tiredness and punished the soft areas; “Rey” responded with strong right hands and asked for more fight, until the bell decreed the end.
