Plant sent to hospital by Canelo

American Caleb Plant not only lost his undefeated record and the chance to make Super Middleweight history, he also had to pay a visit to the hospital.

Following his knockout loss to Canelo Alvarez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Plant was taken to University Medical Center as a precautionary measure.

Plant started the fight trying to keep his distance with his jab, however, the power punches were landed by Canelo, who gradually wore ‘Sweethands’ down until he finished him off in the eleventh round, sending him to the canvas twice, to hand him the first loss of his career.

With this result, Plant was stripped of the International Boxing Federation crown, which he had previously defended three times, and lost the opportunity to become the first undisputed champion in history at 168 pounds, an honor that now belongs to Canelo, who also holds the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization belts.

According to Compubox, Canelo barely beat Plant in total punches, with 117 to 101 (53 to 13 in body shots), however, 42 of Plant’s 101 punches were jabs to just 15 from the Mexican, who landed 102 power punches to just 59 from his opponent.

Last May, Canelo knocked out Billy Joe Saunders and sent him to the hospital after causing multiple fractures to his face.

“Caleb is a good boxer, I respect him a lot, he was a tough opponent who was very skilled and I respect him,” Canelo said after his victory. “In the end we are both men and he wanted to keep fighting. I told him not to feel embarrassed, it was a great fight.

Plant was making it difficult for me, but [trainer] Eddy [Reynoso] was telling me to stay true to the strategy we had in the final two rounds and I managed to beat him. That was the way I had to finish. He was already hurt and I went to annihilate him.”
