Alarcón placed on Dallas practice squad

The Dallas Cowboys officially placed Mexican offensive guard Isaac Alarcón on the practice squad as an International Player on Wednesday.

Alarcón will start the season for the second consecutive year with the exception of being an International Player, so the Cowboys will be able to have 17 players on the practice squad.

Unlike 2020, Alarcón could change his category and be placed as a “standard player” on the practice squad and three weeks later would be eligible to be activated to the 53-player active game-day roster, according to the memo sent by the NFL to its 32 clubs on Aug. 12.

“To do so, the International Player must first terminate his international contract with the practice squad (…). Then, the club can sign the player to a standard NFL practice squad player contract. After three games in which the International Player counted on the practice squad, any team will be allowed to elevate him to the active roster,” reads one of the paragraphs of the league’s memorandum.

Once the club has removed the international tag, it will not be able to place it on the player again this season.

The rest of the Dallas practice squad, as of Wednesday afternoon, with three spots still to be filled, consisted of quarterback Ben DiNucci; receivers Osirus Mitchell and Brandon Smith; running back JaQuan Hardy; fullback Nick Ralston; defensive wing Austin Faoliu; center Braylon Jones; corners Deante Burton and Kyron Brown; defensive tackle Justin Hamilton; tight end Jeremy Sprinkle; and safeties Tyler Coyle and Darian Thompson, who started last season as the Cowboys’ starter.

The practice squad rules put in place last year still apply this season and include four players that the Cowboys can protect from being signed by other teams.

Two practice squad players can be activated for games, which are in addition to the 53 regular game-day players, and can return to the practice squad without having to go on the waiver wire.
