Elaine topped it off with her win in 200m

Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah finished off her second consecutive Olympic double with a time of 21.53 seconds, a national record, in a race that knocked compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price off the podium.

Thompson took a clear lead coming out of the turn into lane seven and on the straight she pulled away from all her rivals. Namibia’s Christine Mboma broke the U20 world record with 21.81 to take second place, and USA’s Gabrielle Thomas, with 21.87, knocked Fraser-Pryce off the podium, who nailed it in the final meters.

The Rio 2016 champion had the chance to complete the sprint double, her second consecutive Olympic double, and Fraser-Pryce the chance to take revenge for her defeat here in the 100m, in which she was second.

In the previous rounds, the defending champion had shown a clear superiority in technique and power over all her rivals.

The American Gabby Thomas, who impressed in the Olympic selection trials with a time of 21.61, the second best in history, had not arrived at the Games in the same physical shape, but the one she has was enough for the bronze.

The performance of the two hyperandrogenic Namibians, Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi, two 400 runners who had to switch to the 200 to avoid the regulations on testosterone limits in distances between the 400 and the mile, was unknown.

Mboma did not miss the new distance and only bowed to the double champion, while Masilingi came in sixth with 22.28.
